Sankheda Furniture
Wooden Furniture
History
Sankheda furniture originates from the town of Sankheda in Vadodara, Gujarat. It has been practiced by the Kharadi community for generations. Known for its lacquered finish and vibrant hues, the craft blends artistry with utility. Traditionally used in Gujarati households during weddings and ceremonies, Sankheda furniture has now gained global appeal for its intricate craftsmanship and cultural value.
Raw Materials and Tools
The primary material used is seasoned teak wood, prized for its strength and durability. Lac (resin) is used for the glossy coating, while natural oils like groundnut oil and kevda leaf enhance the finish. Tools include hand chisels and a lathe machine, essential for woodturning. Painters use fine brushes to decorate with motifs using natural and synthetic colors.
Process
The process begins with cutting and shaping teak wood, followed by joinery using mortise and tenon joints. The wood is turned on a lathe for symmetrical designs. Multiple lacquer coats are applied, each dried and polished. Artisans hand-paint traditional motifs on the glossy surface. The final product is assembled and finished with oil polishing for a lasting, lustrous finish.
Design and Color
Sankheda furniture features bright colors like red, gold, green, and yellow. Designs are inspired by cultural motifs such as conch shells (sankheda), elephant footprints (gaadi), and tulsi leaves. Artisans use geometric borders and floral elements, all hand-painted over lacquered surfaces. These vibrant colors and motifs give each piece a rich, decorative appeal that embodies Gujarati artistry.
Product Range
The range includes chairs, swings (jhoolas), tables, stools, cradles, and decorative wooden items. While rooted in tradition, Sankheda furniture has evolved to suit modern aesthetics. It is now used in contemporary interiors, boutique hotels, and heritage homes. Its functionality, combined with artistic beauty, makes it a preferred choice for buyers seeking heritage pieces with timeless elegance.
