History

Nirmal art and craft trace their roots to the Kakatiya period, influenced by Mughal miniatures and Indian art schools like Kangra and Ajanta. When the Nizam of Hyderabad visited Nirmal, artisans decorated the venue with intricate designs, including a banana bud that unfolded to shower golden petals over his seat. Impressed by their craftsmanship, the Nizam became a patron, fostering the growth of Nirmal’s artistic tradition.

Raw Materials and Tools

Nirmal furniture is crafted from durable teak wood. Tools like chisels, carving knives, sandpaper, brushes, and varnish are used in the process.

Process

The wood is cut and carved into the desired shape, then sanded for a smooth finish. A layer of primer and lappam is applied, followed by varnish for protection. Once dry, intricate floral patterns are hand-painted onto the surface, completing the furniture.

Design and Color

The furniture's golden floral designs are a key feature that sets it apart from other pieces of furniture. Floral paintings on the wood are distinctive features.
