Arunachal Pradesh GI Wood

History

Wood carving is a traditional craft among a number of tribal communities in Arunachal Pradesh. The main centre for woodcarving in the state is the Wancho area of Tirap district. The craft reflects the tribe’s close connection to nature and their cultural beliefs, making it an important part of the Wancho tribe’s heritage.

Raw Materials and Tools

RAW MATERIALS:
• Sheesham (Wood) • Polishes and Stains • Adhesives • Metal Fittings • Paints and Dyes

TOOLS:
• File • Chisel • Wooden mallet

Process

Artisans select durable local hardwoods like teak and sal for their aesthetic appeal. Using traditional hand tools such as chisels and knives, they carve intricate designs reflecting cultural motifs. After carving, the pieces are polished with natural oils to enhance the wood’s grain and protect the surface. This meticulous process ensures that each wooden item is both visually striking and durable, preserving the region’s rich artistic heritage.

Design and Color

The totems frequently portray deities, ancestral spirits, and animals, illustrating the tribe's deep bond with nature and their spiritual beliefs. The carvings are rich in symbolism, with each component signifying a specific aspect of the tribe's cosmology. The designs found in Wancho woodcraft typically consist of geometric shapes and repeating patterns, including zigzags, spirals, and concentric circles.

Product Range

The most iconic products of Wancho woodcraft are the totems and masks, which are used in religious ceremonies and cultural festivals. Other products are figureheads, warriors, miniature morungs, and figurines that represent various occupations typical of rural life, as well as animal figures, vibrant masks, and depictions of Lord Buddha.
