Process

Creating Tharu appliqué involves meticulous stages of craftsmanship. Artisans select a base fabric, cut shapes and patterns from colored fabrics, and stitch them onto the base with needle and thread. This creates a layered, textured effect demanding precision. Embellishments like embroidery, beadwork, or sequins add depth and elegance. The result is intricate, visually appealing artwork showcasing the artisan’s skill and attention to detail.

Design and Color

Tharu appliqué boasts diverse motifs reflecting the community’s cultural traditions and natural surroundings. Common motifs include birds, animals, flowers, and geometric patterns, often carrying symbolic significance and conveying stories. Designs vary by occasion and purpose: festive pieces feature vibrant colors and intricate designs, while everyday items have simpler patterns—showcasing the artisan’s skill and cultural heritage.

Product Range

Tharu appliqué is used to create a wide range of products, including wall hangings, bedspreads, cushion covers, tablecloths, and decorative pieces. The craft has also adapted to contemporary tastes, leading to fashion accessories and apparel incorporating the Tharu appliqué technique.
