Kasuti Embroidery
Embroidery
History
Kasuti embroidery, originating in 7th-century Karnataka, reflects the region's rich handcraft traditions. Derived from the Kannada words “Kai” (hand) and “Suti” (cotton), it signifies “handwork with cotton thread.” Initially used on Ikal cotton sarees, it later adorned silk sarees and pallus. Kasuti features fine geometric patterns and symbolic motifs created with delicate running stitches. Despite modern advancements, it remains a cherished cultural heritage, showcasing Karnataka’s enduring craftsmanship and artistic legacy.

Process
Kasuti embroidery is a detailed process involving cotton or silk fabric, traditionally using black silk. Designs are planned and marked with removable markers, followed by precise thread preparation and a knotless technique. It features four main stitches—Gavanthi (double running stitch), Murgi (zigzag stitch), Negi (darning stitch), and Menthi (cross-stitch)—to create intricate patterns. Cultural motifs like gopuras and chariots are common. Each piece undergoes a quality check before completion.
Design and Color
Kasuti embroidery from Dharwad, Karnataka, is renowned for its intricate geometric patterns on silk pallus. Inspired by temple architecture, designs often depict gopurams, chariots, and palanquins, along with religious motifs. Animal figures like elephants, cows, parrots, and peacocks—especially the elephant—hold cultural significance. Floral patterns such as lotus, jasmine, and marigold add further elegance. This embroidery style reflects the region’s spiritual life, temple carvings, and natural beauty.
Product Range
Kasuti embroidery is applied to a wide range of products, predominantly on silk sarees, especially on their pallus. It is also used to embellish dupattas, shawls, and scarves. Apart from clothing, Kasuti designs are featured on home décor items like cushion covers, bedspreads, and wall hangings.
