Bharoon Craft
Embroidery
History
Bharoon embroidery, rooted in Telangana, is a traditional needlepoint technique practiced by the Banjara community. Known for its vibrant geometric patterns and mirror work, this craft has been passed down through generations, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Raw Materials and Tools
Primary materials include cotton or woolen fabrics, with embellishments such as mirrors, beads, cowrie shells, and coins. Tools comprise needles, threads, and occasionally frames to hold the fabric taut during embroidery.
Process
The process involves creating geometric patterns on the reverse side of the fabric using colorful silk or woolen yarns. Artisans employ upright flat stitches, meticulously filling designs with threadwork. Some stitches resemble cross-stitching, and the embroidery is performed on flexible fabrics with a basic weaving structure.
Design and Color
Designs feature geometric shapes like diamonds, squares, and triangles, often inspired by nature, including motifs of flowers, leaves, birds, and animals. The color palette is bright and vibrant, with shades of red, blue, yellow, green, and white being predominant.
Product Range
The product range encompasses bags, purses, belts, cushion and pillow covers, quilts, bedspreads, skirts, salwar suits, and blouses.
