History

Sanjhi, the ancient art of paper stencilling, is rooted in Mathura and Vrindavan's spiritual heritage. Originating in Vaishnava temples, sanjhi was used by Brahmin priests to create intricate rangolis. The Vaishnav sects integrated this art into temple traditions. A 500-year-old practice, sanjhi is preserved in Vrindavan temples, reflecting Vrindavan's glories, mythological tales, and Krishna's pastimes.

Raw Materials and Tools

Initially, rough paper and banana leaves were used to make the stencils. Nowadays, recycled, handmade paper is used. Dry colours, coloured stones, fresh flowers, mirror pieces, and metal foil are used for filling in the rangoli designs.

Process

Sanjhi stencils were initially made from rough paper and banana leaves, but now recycled handmade paper is used. Designs are hand-drawn on paper, joined with pins, and cut with curved scissors. The paper is turned while cutting to create the stencil. These stencils are used to create rangoli designs, filled with materials like dry colors, stones, flowers, mirror pieces, and metal foil.

Design and Color

Sanjhi art is a vibrant festival of love, embodying Vrindavan's glories, mythological tales, and Krishna's pastimes. Intricate designs reflect divine themes, depicting Radha-Krishna's leelas and sacred symbols. Traditionally, sanjhi stencils created rangoli patterns for temple rituals, enhancing the spiritual ambiance. Colors and materials like flowers, stones, and metal foil add beauty and symbolism, making sanjhi a spiritual and artistic expression of devotion.
