Yakshagana Puppetry
Figurines and Toys
History
Yakshagana string puppetry of Karnataka is deeply rooted in the region. This art form strictly adheres to the ritualistic and stylistic norms of Yakshagana human theater. The puppetry tradition brings epic tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavatha Purana to life.
Raw Materials and Tools
The Yakshagana puppets are carved from wood, typically lightweight yet durable varieties. The costumes are made from fabric, jewelry, and decorative beads that replicate traditional Yakshagana attire. Their headgear is crafted from papier-mâché, wood, and colorful textiles. Paints, brushes, chisels, carving knives, and strings are essential tools.
Process
The puppets are carved by hand from wood into 18-inch-tall figures. Artisans carefully sculpt facial expressions to align with the dramatic nature of Yakshagana. The puppets are then painted with bright colors, adorned with fabric costumes, jewelry, and high headgear. Once complete, they are attached to strings, allowing the Suthradhara to manipulate them during performances.
Design and Color
Yakshagana puppets feature exaggerated expressions, large eyes, and elaborate costumes mirroring traditional dance attire. Bold facial makeup in red, black, and white enhances emotion. Bright colors like red, gold, blue, and green dominate the costumes, adorned with intricate jewelry and decorations. Tall, ornate headgear adds to their dramatic and theatrical presence.
