Process
Crafting wooden toys begins with selecting and cutting a single wood plank based on precise measurements. Artisans carve intricate details using chisels, then smooth the surface with a file. Toys are painted with vibrant colors, often featuring Madhubani-inspired patterns, and detailed with fine brushes. A protective varnish or lacquer is applied for durability. These handcrafted toys showcase Bihar’s rich cultural heritage, emphasizing the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship.
Design and Color
The traditional toys and dolls of Bihar feature vibrant designs, intricate motifs, and a rich palette of colors that highlight the region’s artistic heritage. Clay toys often showcase folk-style motifs, including elephants, dancing figures, and horse-and-rider representations, particularly in Darbhanga.
