History

Toys in India date back to the Indus Valley Civilization (2500 BCE), with terracotta figurines, whistles, and carts unearthed in excavations. Made from clay, wood, and stone, these toys weren’t just for play—they helped children develop skills and understand their surroundings. Many depicted animals, humans, and daily life, showcasing the era's artistry and offering a glimpse into ancient Indian culture and craftsmanship.

Raw Materials and Tools

Primary materials include locally sourced clay and water. Tools consist of wooden molds, carving implements, and kilns for firing. Natural dyes and brushes are used for coloring and detailing.

Process

Artisans source local clay, shape it by hand or using molds, and detail the designs with carving tools. The items are sun-dried, then fired in kilns to achieve durability. Post-firing, some toys are painted or glazed for aesthetic enhancement.

Design and Color

Designs often depict animals, human figures, and mythological themes, reflecting regional cultures. Colors range from earthy tones to vibrant hues, achieved using natural dyes. Intricate patterns and motifs enhance visual appeal.
