History

Gokak Toys, originating from Karnataka, India, have a legacy spanning over 200 years. This craft is hereditary, with artisans called Jingars preserving the tradition. The toys are celebrated for their vibrant colors and realistic designs, reflecting the region's cultural richness.

Raw Materials and Tools

Artisans use softwood varieties like Hariwala, Polki, and Hale, along with natural adhesives such as tamarind seed paste. Tools include chisels, hammers, and brushes. Earlier, indigenous colors were prepared, but now readymade dye powders are preferred.

Process

The toy-making process involves carving wood, coating it with a paste made from tamarind seed powder, and applying layers of chalk powder and glue. Artisans then paint the toys using vibrant dyes, ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal.

Design and Color

Gokak Toys feature intricate designs inspired by fruits, vegetables, animals, and birds. The use of natural and realistic colors enhances their charm, making them visually appealing.

Product Range

The range includes over 144 variants, such as artificial fruits, vegetables, and animal figurines. These toys are crafted as single units or in bunches, showcasing the artisans' dexterity and creativity.
