History
Kaleere have their roots in Punjab, where they emerged as symbols of prosperity, happiness, and protection for brides. Traditionally, they were worn after the chooda ceremony to bless the bride with good fortune. Some historical accounts suggest that kaleere once held small food items to sustain the bride during her journey to her new home. Over time, kaleere evolved into ornate bridal accessories reflecting the region’s rich cultural traditions.
Raw Materials and Tools
Kaleere are made using materials such as gold-plated or silver-plated metals, lightweight alloys, silk threads, faux pearls, beads, and small embellishments like coconuts and shells. Traditional kaleere sometimes used real coconuts or dried fruits. Essential tools include metal wires, pliers, soldering devices, glue guns, and embroidery needles for decorating. Process
The making of kaleere begins with crafting a metal framework, typically umbrella-shaped. Artisans then attach decorative elements like beads, pearls, or miniature coconuts using wire and thread. Traditional kaleere designs are umbrella-shaped, symbolizing shelter and blessings. They often feature motifs like coconuts, beads, butterflies, and floral elements.
