History
Katki chappal, a traditional handcrafted leather footwear from Odisha, India, boasts a rich heritage of craftsmanship and intricate embroidery. This artisanal skill has been passed down for generations, primarily among women artisans who meticulously handcraft each pair. The slip-on design, without laces or straps, makes them both elegant and practical for daily wear.
Historically, Katki chappals were worn by locals for their durability and comfort, but over time, their aesthetic appeal made them popular for special occasions as well.
Raw Materials and Tools
Raw Materials: Leather
Tools: Stitching awl, whetstone, shoe last
Process
Katki chappals are traditionally handcrafted by women, starting with tanning durable, supple leather. Once tanned, the leather is cut into precise shapes and stitched using strong thread and age-old techniques. Intricate hand embroidery with Resham or silk thread adds elegance. Finally, the chappals are finely polished and finished, showcasing the craftsmanship and cultural heritage behind each pair.
Design and Color
What truly sets Katki chappals apart is the intricate embroidery that adorns them. Skilled artisans delicately embroider vibrantly coloured yarns in beautiful patterns onto the leather surface, creating intricate designs. These embroideries often depict traditional motifs inspired by nature, such as flowers, leaves, and peacocks.
Product Range
The primary product crafted using the Katki chappal craft in Odisha is traditional slip-on leather footwear. However, the artisans have also extended their skills to create other products such as stylish sandals, bags, purses, wallets, coin pouches, keychains, and key holders.
